Poecile atricapillus / P. carolinensis
Chickadees
The quarter-ounce furnaces that need your suet most.
Black-capped Chickadees north, Carolina Chickadees south — plus Mountain, Chestnut-backed, and Boreal in their corners — and every one of them a quarter-ounce bird that survives subzero nights by burning fat almost as fast as it finds it. No feeder bird converts suet into survival more directly.
Range
One chickadee or another is resident in every US state except Hawaii: Black-capped across the north and mountains, Carolina through the Southeast, Mountain in the Rockies, Chestnut-backed on the Pacific coast, Boreal in far-north spruce.
Seasonal habits
Residents that flock up in winter and run a fixed daily circuit — your suet cake becomes a scheduled stop within days of discovery. Demand peaks with cold: a chickadee eats over a third of its body weight daily in deep winter.
How to identify one
- Black cap and bib, white cheeks, buffy flanks; tiny and acrobatic
- Carolina vs Black-capped is best told by range and song (four-note vs two-note whistle)
- The 'chick-a-dee-dee' scold — more 'dees' means more alarm
At the suet feeder
Chickadees grab and go — one peck of suet, off to a branch, back in a minute. They're fearless first discoverers of new feeders, and the flock they lead (nuthatches, Downies, kinglets) usually follows them to your cake within the week.
Feeding one this winter? Homemade cakes beat store-bought — one part fat, one part peanut butter, three parts dry.
