The bird that walks down trees headfirst, announcing itself with a nasal yank-yank. White-breasted Nuthatches are daily suet customers that also run a caching operation — much of what they take is wedged into bark for later, an insurance policy your cake is funding.
Range
Year-round across most of the US wherever mature deciduous or mixed forest grows; thinnest in the Gulf lowlands and treeless plains. Joined by Red-breasted Nuthatches in conifer country and Brown-headed in southeastern pines.
Seasonal habits
Resident and faithful: a mated pair holds the same territory all year, visiting suet steadily from fall through spring and hitting hardest before storms, when caching kicks into overdrive.
How to identify one
- Blue-gray above, white face and breast, black cap; chestnut under the tail
- Moves headfirst down trunks — no other feeder bird does
- Nasal, tin-horn 'yank-yank' call
At the suet feeder
Takes suet, sunflower seeds, and peanuts with equal enthusiasm, usually one grab at a time. Nuthatches handle upside-down suet feeders effortlessly — a starling-proofing trick that costs them nothing.
